Textmap List

Made in 2011

The sound of a rotary saw
A zigzag crack in a brick wall
Girls laughing at the bustop
The smell of flowers – pink and white
A bus pulls up behind me – a hiss of brakes
An empty sandwich carton left on a recycle bin
A delivery truck – hazard lights on, parked at the side of the road
A white serviette
A man in a blue t-shirt cycles whilst carrying a plastic bag
The delivery van starts up – indicates to pull out
A language student lights her cigarette
A man in shirt sleeves leans against a wall texting
Convex mirror on a gate post
Strands of ivy crawling through a wooden fence
A discarded packet of Rizlas – torn for roaches
‘Warning CCTV in operation’
A young boy in a flat cap pulled over his face
A bell tolls
A girl on her computer sits at the window looking out
Blue, yellow and white balloons
Two distant blasts of a train horn made bigger by the stillness of the air
The cackle of a bird
The sound of someone brushing – perhaps sanding
A summer house beyond the garden
Ornate iron gates in the shape of swans
The wrong time on the church tower – one side at least
Vivid red flowers
Green moss
A man in a cream hat carries a pile of boxes, he puts them down then loads up his car
Another man stands with his bicycle, he rolls a cigarette, picking his tobacco and dropping it on the paper
Two men either side of the road, both carry umbrellas
‘Private car park’
A striped lawn covered with fallen leaves
Discarded empty drinks cup
A twisted piece of metal
A scattering of screws next to a wall
Blackbird singing
Yellow flowers – like annotations on a brick wall
Another saw starts up
The sound of muffled music
A door slams, someone leaves a house
A man walks reading a book
Two French women walk past
A girl keys in the entry code of a gate
Bells chime in the distance
“You have to start every time…”
A man cross the street untangling his headphones
On the other side a man on his phone jumps in his car
Three young women walk into a building
The squeak of a bike
Two men walk in conversation talking about retirement. One of them carries a plastic bucket
Ugly building
The squeak of shutters being pulled down
A white van leaves the driveway
A siren whines in the distance
The clatter of empty bottles
The ring of a cyclist’s bell
The cooing of a pigeon
A parking meter covered up – out of order
Stubborn puddles at the edge of the road hold onto the reflections of a car
“It’s nothing but Harry Potter.”
The chirrup of a bird
The sound of drilling
A man with a large blonde ponytail saunters across the road with his hands in his pockets
Lights on inside
A man walks eating a sandwich
Another stands still checking his mobile phone
Old Stubborn buildings
A man talks gesturing with his hands
Laughter from inside the building next to me
Laughter too behind me
Someone coughs
An old man in a flat cap walks with a glove on the hand that holds his brolly
Bright pink flowers, stark against the grey wall
A young child sits on his dad’s shoulders
The sound of a church organ – a single chord – then another
Footsteps as a woman walks past
The continuous exhalation of an extractor fan
A woman sneezes
A man half-clears his throat
White silver-birch sapling
Rice Krispies on the pavement
A pink piece of string and glittery paper
Empty cigarette packet
Squashed green party string
A man in a hard hat works up a scaffold
The sound of drilling
Makeshift ‘no access’ sign
Discarded packet for cheesy cream slice
Squashed seeds on the pavement like patches of rust
A man lowers his umbrella
The postman walks out of a doorway
A young girl, oriental, drags a red suitcase
Blue party string
Language students
Red umbrella, red carnation
Two people push at a front door
Yellow spray-paint markings on the pavement
A builder sits in his van reading the paper, his right hand against the side of his face
The guttural rumble of a motorbike
Sudden, comparative quiet
Broken again
A dropped red carnation
A new [?] – two women stand outside, one smoking, one on her mobile phone
A woman parks her bike outside a flooring shop
An empty coffee cup
The pungent smell of plants outside the letting agency
Strong wind
Lorry pulls away from the pedestrian crossing
Fallen sign
Fallen rose
Branches swaying
A skip lorry thunders down the road
School children cross in the distance
An arch cut within a hedge
More children crossing, the teacher waits
Overgrown driveway
The last of them crosses
A builder talks to the driver of the skip lorry, grey baggy trousers and white t-shirt
He walks past on the phone
Ugly extension
Red and white tape flutters in the wind
It gets stronger
A twig falls from a tree
Recent tarmac, a patchwork on the pavement
The trees sound like waves crashing on a beach
A coach parked at the side of the road
Dug up pavement cordened off with orange barriers
A bicycle propped against the exterior wall of a house
The sound of raking
It’s a man shovelling pebbles
Another skip in another driveway, clods of turf stacked beside it
Brand new stone on the pillar of a wall
The distant sound of a car horn
More ugly extensions
The song of a blackbird
Flashing orange lights of a dustbin lorry – green luminous vests
The hiss of brakes as the dustbin lorry pulls to the side of the road
The sickly smell of refuse in the back
The sound of bins being pulled from driveways
The clatter of glass bottles
A bee surveys the flowers in a hedge
Part of the pavement raised by the root of a tree
Split at the top like a freshly baked loaf

Writhing pipes in a hole in the pavement
Leaves rush past on another gust
Yellow flowers look out through the rails
A man pushes a young girl in a pushchair
A woman carries two plastic shopping bags then loads them into the boot of her car
A young girl, bag over her shoulder, crosses the road
The signal beeps when no-one is there
Water at the side of the road ripples in the wind
The squeak of an overhanging sign
A young girl kisses her dog, held in a bag in front of her
Huge St. George’s flag covers the facade of a pub
A young girl skips
A blackboard outside a pub advertises the next game – spaces for the teams where the last have been rubbed out
Empty biciyle racks
Lights embedded in the pavement
A man in a baseball cap tests out a phone in a phone shop
Someone laughs
“Well I’ve got one for you to scratch”
The clatter of shopping trolleys
The rain starts to fall again
The sickly fluorescence of a shop’s interior
Someone blows a squeaky toy
The beeping of a till
DVDs on a table outside a shop
The rain falls harder
A couple of young men shelter from the rain – fucking every other word
“Just wait here for a second”
A couple load themselves into a taxi – the driver holds the boot as they put in the buggies
A woman runs for shelter – her two children follow on their scooters
The rain eases – back onto the street
A couple leave a shop – the woman clutching a blue plastic bag to her chest
Rain again
Times for the next bus illuminated above the stop
“Where are you from?”
“Russia.”
5 minutes to next bus
A young woman shelters from the rain – a painted face to make a frown of sorts – fag in one hand, phone in the other
The conversation behind me continues in stilted English
Words scratched on an old column – ‘BEER’
Buddhas and tacky dogs in the window of a second hand shop
